Craig Mod is a writer, photographer, and walker. He creates essays, books, podcasts and newsletters based on the intersection of his core interests. A lot of his work focuses on walking in Japan, publishing, startups and photography.

    Kissa by Kissa

    Kissa by Kissa is a book about walking 1,000+km of the countryside of Japan along the ancient Nakasendō highway, the culture of toast (toast!), and mid-twentieth century Japanese cafés called kissaten.

    The first edition sold out in 2 days. By comparison, Art Space Tokyo took 6 weeks to sell $24k. Koya Bound took 3 weeks to sell $60k.

    He shared behind the scenes details in his newsletter: Kissa — Second Edition and Book Goals.

    He shared a video of signing and stamping the books.

    The journey was featured at:

    Koya Bound

    Koya Bound features photography from Kumano Kodo, a UNESCO World Heritage pilgrimage path in Wakayama, Japan.

    The project was launched via a successful Kickstarter Campaign.  596 backers pledged $64,225

    He held an in-person book launch during October, 2016.

    He wrote about designing the book at To Make a Book, Walk on a Book.

    Art Space Tokyo

    Art Space Tokyo is an intimate guide to Tokyo and its art world. It was was co-authored by Ashley Rawlings and Craig Mod.

    Other Projects

    Hi.Co

    He cofounded the storytelling community Hitotoki. Hitotoki – also called Hi.Co – was  a writing platform where each piece began on a smartphone.
